Low Tech Communication Resources – FAQs & Guidance

TalkLink Trust – Technical Services

Low tech communication tools are a simple, affordable, and effective way to support people who have communication needs. Below you’ll find answers to common questions and guidance to help you choose and use these resources.

What does “low tech” mean?

Low tech communication tools don’t rely on batteries, screens, or electronics. They include printed or laminated boards, picture cards, flip books, symbol charts, and other paper-based or durable resources. They are often the first step into Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), and can be used alongside high tech devices like iPads or speech generating devices.

Who benefits from low tech resources?

Low tech tools can help:

  • Children learning to communicate

  • People with speech or language delays

  • Individuals with disabilities affecting speech

  • Anyone needing a simple backup when high tech tools are unavailable

What kinds of tools are available?

  • Core boards – boards with essential everyday words

  • Flip charts or communication books – multiple pages with symbols and words

  • Switch adapted Call Bells – supporting access to summon support

What kinds of tools are coming soon?

  • Custom Core boards – bilingual and options for customisation

  • PODD Books

  • Alternate Pencil

How do I choose the right tool?

  • Think about where it will be used (home, school, community)

  • Consider physical ability (can they point, turn pages, or use eye gaze?)

  • Start simple – a single page with key vocabulary is often best

  • Build up gradually as confidence grows

  • Talk to your Speech-Language Therapist for tailored advice

How do I order?

  • You can order directly through our store here

  • We supply throughout New Zealand – delivery costs (non-rural) are included in the price

  • Schools, therapists, and whānau can all purchase

  • Some resources may be partially customised – ask us if you need something specific

Do you provide training or support?

Not yet however are looking to be added soon!

How do I look after low tech tools?

  • Most resources are designed and printed on a durable product or laminated. These can be wiped down with mild disinfectant.

  • Store flat or in a protective cover

  • Replace pages or parts if they wear out

  • If used with battery or power – regularly check connections

What does it cost?

  • Prices vary depending on the size and complexity of the resource

  • Discounts may be available for bulk orders

  • Some people may be able to access funding via an accredited assessor

  • Non-rural delivery options are included in the price

Can they be customised?

Yes, although only in certain parts and/or partially.

Additional costs apply.

We can adapt resources to:

  • Use larger symbols or text

  • Include different languages (e.g., te reo Māori)

  • Include personalised vocabulary

Why choose low tech tools?

  • Always available – often no charging required

  • Affordable and easy to replace

  • Portable and flexible

  • Great backup when high tech devices aren’t working
